MEXICO CITY, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) — Tropical storm Ileana made landfall Saturday afternoon in the municipality of Ahome in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, the government’s National Water Commission (Conagua) reported.
“The center of Tropical Storm Ileana made landfall in the municipality of Ahome, Sinaloa, approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Topolobampo, and 35 kilometers south-southeast of Los Mochis, both towns in the state,” the Mexican agency said.
Ileana had maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, gusts of 85 kilometers per hour and was moving north at nine kilometers per hour.
Due to the wide cloud bands, torrential rains are expected in the south of the state of Sonora and in the north of Sinaloa, and very heavy rains in Baja California Sur, Chihuahua and Durango.
Winds with gusts of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour and waves of one to three meters high are expected on the eastern coast of Baja California, the northern coast of Sinaloa and the southern coast of Sonora.
The rainfall could cause flooding, an increase in the level of rivers and streams, as well as landslides and flooding in low-lying areas of the aforementioned states. Therefore, the population and maritime navigation are urged to heed meteorological warnings.
Last May, Mexican authorities predicted up to 41 named cyclones in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the 2024 season.
