Tropical Storm Carlotta brings heavy rains and flooding to western Mexico

MEXICO CITY, July 31 (Xinhua) — Tropical storm Carlotta, which formed in the Pacific Ocean on Monday, is causing heavy rains and flooding in western Mexico.

According to the latest report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the rainfall includes electrical discharges and hail and is affecting the states of Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán and Nayarit.

“The center of Carlotta is located approximately 515 kilometers southwest of Playa Pérula, Jalisco, and 535 kilometers southwest of Manzanillo, Colima,” the source said.

In addition, the meteor has maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, gusts of 95 kilometers per hour and is moving northwest at 19 kilometers per hour.

For this reason, authorities urged the population and tourists to take extreme precautions against high waves and wind.

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), up to 41 named cyclones will form in the Atlantic and Pacific in the 2024 season and, of that total, five cyclones could impact Mexico.

Conagua expects a very active season for the Mexican Pacific, as it is expected that between eight and nine will reach the classification of tropical storms, four or five will become category 1 or 2 hurricanes, and three to four will be categories 3, 4 and 5.
