Sydney (Australia), April 12. The Australian authorities activated the yellow alert on Wednesday in the northwest of the country before the arrival of a tropical cyclone, currently category 3 (out of a maximum of 5), which gains strength as it approaches the coast.
The cyclone, named Ilsa and which could reach category 4 on Thursday, will make landfall early Friday in a sparsely populated area on the north coast of the state of Western Australia, according to the latest report from the regional Meteorological Department.
The authorities activated the alert in order to expedite preparations for the arrival of the natural phenomenon, which is located about 340 kilometers northwest of the Broome district.
The tropical cyclone, with sustained winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 195, already affects part of the coastal zone, for which reason residents of the affected region were urged to stock up on food and seek shelter.
In addition, an unknown number of workers from the Wallal Downs cattle station, Newcrest’s Telfer mine and visitors who were in a trailer park were evacuated, local media reported.
If course does not change, Ilsa will be the first category 4 cyclone to make landfall in Australia in four years, after the scourge of Cyclone Trevor, in March 2019, which left extensive damage in the state of Queensland (northeast) and the Territory of the North. EFE
