Rio de Janeiro. Brazil has deployed troops, armored vehicles and warships to beef up security around the summit of leaders of the Group of 20 major economies, who meet on Monday and Tuesday at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro Bay. Janeiro.
Air traffic has been restricted, including the use of drones, and flights have been canceled for two days at the nearby Santos Dumont national airport.
Authorities are taking no risks following Wednesday’s failed attack on Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court in the capital, Brasilia. According to the police, a right-wing activist committed suicide with explosives in front of the court after trying to enter with a homemade bomb.
Army soldiers patrolled the area around the museum, streets were closed to traffic and armored cars were parked outside the building where G20 leaders will meet.
Naval vessels patrolled the picturesque Botafogo Bay, between the museum and Rio’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, while marines disembarked from landing craft on an adjacent beach.
“We can deploy troops very quickly from our naval base using the sea as an access route if we need to reinforce security,” Marine Captain Goncalves Maia told reporters.
Federal police said they scoured the museum for bomb risks and stationed snipers around the building to protect the 84 leaders and ministers expected to attend the summit.
The government implemented a measure called Law and Order Guarantee that allows the temporary deployment of military forces during the summit with the power to detain and arrest any suspects.
“We are acting with the highest level of security possible given the size of the foreign authorities that will be here,” said the director of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues.
A 26,000-strong security force, including 2,900 military personnel, will monitor the area and protect the summit venue.
