Correspondent Iris de Graaf about the Russian view
“We hear more and more threatening war language on Russian state television. The West would like to cause panic in Kiev with the aim of weakening Russia. And Russia should prepare for this with military exercises on its own territory. Or the example that Russia a sleeping bear that you should leave alone And that as soon as you provoke and wake the bear, the turnips are cooked. But despite the troop build-up and all that threatening war language, there does not seem to be a real invasion immediately.
This conflict has flared up every now and then for seven years and is used in a geopolitical display of power. It is a well-known tactic to make a statement to the west: do not interfere with our sphere of influence. However, an invasion cannot be ruled out. When an area is so tense and both sides add fuel to the fire, any incident or misunderstanding can escalate very quickly into something bigger.”
