Tired of the restrictions, the fishermen of Trois-Ilets demonstrated on Sunday morning. They gathered at Anse à l’Âne to denounce a situation they no longer tolerate.
They are indeed prohibited from fishing with the trap in an area near the coast. According to environmental police officers from the French Office for Biodiversity, this ban is justified because this fishing technique destroys the marine ecosystem. In particular, it endangers coral reefs.
Fishermen feel aggrieved given the wealth of the area concerned. Divers, swimmers, and amateur fishermen are numerous to go there. Professionals of the sea do not understand why the restrictions do not apply to everyone.
“There is activity in the area. As soon as we go to the area, we are filmed, we are verbalized. Me, we seized my boat, I cannot do anything, I cannot give to eat for my children “, explains Miguel Rohkua, fisherman from Trois-Îlets.
Fishermen are still seeking to open a dialogue with the authorities concerned in order to relax these measures.
