Santa Tecla rescued an important victory at its home, the Adolfo Pineda Municipal Gymnasium, where it received Lobos in a match that offered many emotions after finishing 65-65 and going to overtime. Finally, the locals won 80-76 and now the Tecleños are in second place in the table of the 2024 Apertura Tournament Copa Tigo Sports of the Major Basketball League (LMB).
The competitiveness and good level of basketball was evident last night in the confrontation between Santa Tecla and Lobos. The first minutes were very even, with 6:35 left to play, the local Edgar Contreras made a three-point shot and put the tie at 6-6 on the board and from there the Tecleños took advantage of their opportunities to score and close the first roll 22-14.
The second quarter served for those led by coach Alexander Colocho to implement the strategy that helped them score more points on the scoreboard. The American Sean Scott stood out by adding 10 of the 20 points with which Lobos won the second period against the 15 of the locals. On the overall scoreboard the hosts still had a minimal advantage 37-34.
The response from the Tecleño team was immediate and in the third period, they dominated the game by winning that set 13-6, so on aggregate the advantage of the locals was expanded to 10 points (50-40).
With 50 seconds left in the fourth roll, a foul on Irving Sandoval allowed Lobos to tie the game at 63-63. But with 26 seconds left, Anthony López scored two more points for Santa Tecla and when everything indicated that the locals were going to win, Sean scored and tied the score 65-65 with four seconds left, which forced play extra time.
Stocks remained intense during overtime. Little by little the locals took advantage, taking advantage of their offensive chances and closing ranks in the defense, thus managing to win 15-11 in extra time and 80-76 on aggregate.
Andravious Smith was Santa Tecla’s top scorer with 34 points, followed by Luis Portal, who added 25 more to the locals’ tally. While for Lobos, Sean Scott scored 26 points, followed by Colombian Michael Hinestroza with 20 points and David Vásquez with 13.
Cojute, his third victory in the tournament
