Triple European Champion and Spectacular Marathon Finish: Adam Kszczot’s Journey on the Track and Beyond

Triple European champion in the 800m outdoors and also three times indoor title over the same distance, the Pole Adam Kszczot ended his career on the track in 2022. But at 34, he still runs for pleasure, finally almost.

On Sunday, the former fine tactician of the double lap, also twice world vice-champion in the 800m (2015, 2017) and indoor world champion in the distance in 2018, competed in his first marathon, in New York. Credited with an honorable final time of 2h50’9”, he nevertheless experienced a spectacular failure in the last meters of the race, in the middle of Central Park. Suddenly running out of strength, he collapsed on the New York tarmac, before being supported by two friendly competitors, who literally carried him to within a few meters of the finish line, which Kszczot held to cross alone.
