Tripartite Meeting in Doha: Hostage Release and Truce Talks

Atlanta, USA (CNN) – A diplomatic source familiar with the talks told CNN that a tripartite meeting between Qatari officials and the heads of Israeli and American intelligence was held in Doha on Thursday to discuss the release of the hostages in exchange for a humanitarian truce and the entry of aid into Gaza.

The meeting between CIA Director William Burns, Mossad Chief David Barnea, and Qatari officials discussed a proposed plan to release between 10 and 20 civilian hostages in exchange for a cessation of fighting for 3 days, the entry of more aid, and enabling Hamas to collect and deliver a list of names of detainees inside Gaza, according to the source.

CNN reported on Wednesday that there is no possibility of Israel agreeing to a permanent cessation of fighting without releasing a large number of hostages, according to a senior American official.

The multilateral talks – in which Qatar plays a key mediating role – have been ongoing for weeks and have so far produced several ideas.

CNN previously reported that an Israeli official said that Israel is “ready to stop” if there is certainty that Hamas is “serious about releasing the hostages.”

What is not clear is how long Israel might be willing to agree to, and what is the acceptable number of hostages to be released.

CNN previously reported that the negotiations also focused on a hostage exchange with Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
