– We don’t know who owns it. We have no idea where it came from, nor do we know everything that is on board, says the country’s Prime Minister Keith Rowley about the ship that is behind the problems.

Because from the sunken ship, the oil flows into the water.

The oil spill is said to have affected around 15 kilometers of the country’s coastline. More beaches will follow BBC have been covered in oil.

The ship sank on Wednesday in the waters off the Caribbean island. No distress signal had been sent out, there were no signs of life on board or who owned the 100 meter long ship.

But there was no doubt about the consequences of the shipwreck. The extensive oil leak has led to the Prime Minister declaring a national crisis, and efforts are being made to control the oil spill along the coast of the island.

– Clean-up and restoration can only begin when we have the situation under control. Right now we don’t have that, says Rowley.

Rowley says the vessel may have been involved in shady businesses.

Until now, divers at the sunken ship have not managed to stop the leak.

Hundreds of volunteers contribute to the work to prevent the spread of the oil masses. The oil leak comes in the middle of the carnival celebrations and is feared to threaten the tourism industry, which is important for the island states.
