Triggers Catalytic Reactions, Ozone Hole in Antarctica Gets Bigger

ALASKA – European Union Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (ECMWF) reveals hole size ozone layer which formed annually in the south pole region is now larger than the continent of Antarctica.

As reported by CBS News , ozone layer reported thinning and forming holes in Antarctica during the Southern Hemisphere spring from August to October. READ ALSO – Ozone Layer Hole in Antarctica Shrinks

The hole reaches its largest size between mid-September and mid-October.

“Earlier this year, the formation of a hole in the ozone layer was as expected.

“Nevertheless, recent predictions suggest that the formation of this hole is becoming larger than usual,” said Copernicus director Vincent-Henri Peuch.

The hole formation is usually caused by chemicals such as chlorine and bromine moving into the stratosphere and then triggering catalytic reactions during the Antarctic winter.

Ozone hole associated with the Antarctic polar vortex which is a swirling collection of cold air that moves around the Earth.

Ozone layer protects the Earth from the sun’s harmful rays but this protective layer is threatened by increasing industrial and air pollution.
