Who is Trifon Pechenga Kola?

The boy Mitrofan was born in the 16th century in the Novgorod province into the family of a priest. While still a child, he decided to devote his life to apostolic deeds and become a preacher among the pagan Lapps, whom he learned about from the stories of fish farmers. And when he grew up, Tryphon went to carry out this idea on the Kola Peninsula. He learned their beliefs and learned their language. The Lapps were wary of the saint, and the preacher had to overcome many difficulties; he was subjected to persecution and even beatings. However, gradually, with a wise and kind word and meekness, he managed to convert many pagans to Christianity. Throughout his subsequent life, the saint preached Christianity to the pagans. With like-minded people, Tryphon built a temple for converts, and for monks seeking solitude in 1532 he founded the Trinity Pechenga Monastery “near the cold sea, near the Murmansk border.” Ivan groznyj helped him and endowed him with a monastery. Tryphon died at an old age, having lived on Pechenga for almost 60 years. In 1589, the Swedes destroyed the Pechenga monastery, but later a church in the name of St. Tryphon was built on the site of the destroyed temple, and the Church of the Presentation of the Lord was erected over the saint’s grave.
