Trichinellosis Outbreak in Levski Village: 37 People Infected from Wild Boar Meat Consumption

37 people in the village of Levski, Panagyurishte municipality, contracted trichinellosis from wild boar meat that they consumed during the past holidays in December, reported Dr. Dimitar Vuchev, a parasitologist at the Regional Health Inspectorate in Pazardzhik, NOVA reported.

All the sick are under home observation, and the others who consumed the game meat have been prescribed prophylactic treatment.

RZI-Pazardzhik warns that during the hunting period the probability of contracting trichinellosis – a severe parasitic disease that affects humans, domestic and wild pigs, as well as cats, dogs, foxes, wolves, jackals, rats, mice, etc. – increases. Most often, the cause of the disease is poorly heat-treated meat from an infected animal.
