Once upon a time in hollywood (United States, 2019) by Quentin Tarantino tells the story of the run-down Hollywood actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his friend and stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).
And in parallel the life of the actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and the members of the Manson Family, led by Charles Manson, is narrated. The events take place in Los Angeles, California, in 1969.
From 1958 to 1963 Dalton starred in the western television series Bounty Law from 1958 to 1963. His attempt to transition to the cinema does not work and in 1969 he is struggling to find work.
Casting agent Marvin Schwarzs (Al Pacino) advises Dalton to do westerns in Italy, but feels that it detracts from what his career has been.
Booth, his friend and stuntman, lives in a trailer with his dog. He always drives for Dalton who, due to his alcoholism, has had traffic problems.
In parallel, actress Sharon Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski, move into the house next to Dalton’s, who dreams of befriending them to restore his status.
Booth gives a young girl (Margaret Qualley) who lives in a commune (Manson Family) on the Spahn Ranch on a freeway ride. He knows the place because they filmed a movie there. He asks to see the owner because he suspects that he is being abused. Sees it.
Dalton, in the company of Booth, moved to Italy where he filmed two westerns. There he marries Italian star Francesca Capucci (Lorenza Izzo). Together they travel back to the United States. Here you tell your double that you can no longer pay for your services.
Members of the Manson Family park their vehicle in front of Polanski and Tate’s home. Dalton goes out into the street and asks them to leave, they can’t be there.
They leave, but return with the intention of killing Dalton. They break into his house, but they meet Booth who identifies them. Order the dog to attack them. They kill two of the gang and one who in the attempt to flee falls into the pool, burned with a flamethrower.
Booth has some injuries and is hospitalized. In the scandal over what has happened, Sebring (Jay Sebering), Tate’s friend, strikes up a conversation with Dalton and Tate invites him to have a drink at his house.
The double story, told in the manner of Tarantino, with a large dose of violence, is the pretext to pay tribute to the cinema and Hollywood of the sixties of the last century.
The director uses all genres (western, comedy, musical, thriller …), to build his tribute to the cinema of the United States and its Mecca in Los Angeles, California.
It is also a tribute to the great actors and actresses of those years and the expression of nostalgia for how in the past the cinema was made and the characters that gave it life were articulated (producers, directors, artists, stuntmen, extras, stage hands … ).
There is also a tribute to the music of the sixties. The soundtrack has more than thirty songs of the time of the most diverse styles.
The film is a complex construction that shows the extraordinary creativity of Tarantino. A host of great artists performs.
At the 2019 Oscars, he received ten nominations. For his performance Brad Pitt won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. And the film won the Oscar for Best Production Design.
DiCaprio won Best Actor at the Golden Globes and Pitt won Best Supporting Actor. Tarantino for Best Screenplay. The BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor was won by Pitt.
