Tribute, hedge of honor, guest book, isula morta: Corsica gathers while waiting for the funeral of Yvan Colonna.

The remains of Yvan Colonna were returned to Corsica on Friday night by the 22:00 plane. Nearly 1,500 people had paid tribute to him by hoisting a hedge of honor on hundreds of Corsican flags as the funeral vehicle passed by on the road to Campo Dell’Oro. Only the crackling of the fumes could be heard. Many then followed the vehicle, still in great silence, to the resting place at the Vazzio. Red and white candles lined the path.

Yvan Colonna’s funeral will take place tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in his village of Cargèse. The two churches of the village have sounded the death knell today and the mourning mass will be said by Father Antoine Forget at the Latin Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Interment will follow in the family chapel in Menasina. The ships’ fog horns will sound at the same time, masses will be given in certain towns such as Bastia, and a majority of town halls will be closed for the day, as will shops and businesses. The Chemins de Fer de la Corse will have their program disrupted at the call of the STC.

On Tuesday, the Community of Corsica raised its flags.

A guest book was set up by Yvan Colonna’s support committee
