Tribuna do Norte – Eclipse of the Super Moon: coincidence will be visible between today and tomorrow

Tonight (25) will again have the so-called Super Moon, the name given to the natural satellite when it reaches its point of greatest proximity to Earth. The astronomical event will be even more interesting in some locations, because it will be accompanied by the lunar eclipse that will occur from 5:47 am on Wednesday (26), in Brasília time.

According to the United States Space Agency (NASA), the eclipse will be total in the western United States and Canada, throughout Mexico and most of Central America and Ecuador, as well as in western Peru and the south Chile and Argentina.

It can also be seen in its entirety in eastern Australia and New Zealand and the Pacific islands, including Hawaii. In Brazil, the eclipse will be penumbral or partial, very difficult to observe because it will start at the moment when the Super Moon will be setting on the horizon.

“The good news is that tonight’s Super Moon, with its peak at 10:50 pm, may inspire people to wake up early to follow, even online, the total eclipse through the National Observatory page on YouTube,” he told Agência Brasil the astronomer and researcher at the National Observatory Josina Nascimento.

“When the Moon enters the penumbra, we have a penumbral eclipse, when it enters part of the umbra, we have a partial eclipse and, when it enters fully in the umbra, we have the total eclipse, when the Moon becomes even more beautiful and reddish”, explained the astronomer.

According to Josina, the best point of view of the eclipse in Brazil will be in the western part of the country, where, for some time, it will be partial. “The further west, the better it will be seen. In the penumbral eclipse, we were unable to see the moon’s diminished luminosity with the naked eye, ”he added.

According to Josina, eclipses are not so rare astronomical events. “We had one, including a recent one, in 2019. The eclipse of the Moon occurs from one to three times a year, and every eclipse of the Moon occurs on a full moon, and the full moon of perigee occurs from 1 to 4 times a year”. According to NASA, the last lunar eclipse that occurred during a Supermoon occurred six years ago.
