Tribeca Film Festival in New York starts with J.Lo documentary

The New York Tribeca Film Festival opens this year with the world premiere of “Halftime”, a documentary about Latina star Jennifer Lopez. The Netflix production by director Amanda Micheli follows the rise of the actress and singer and gives an insight into the private life of the 52-year-old. The organizers announced the selection of the film on Wednesday (local time).

Oscar winner Robert De Niro, co-founder of the Tribeca Festival, emphasizes the importance of “strong stories”, as told in the documentary “Halftime”. Producer Jane Rosenthal noted that the film also explores Lopez’s involvement as an activist and her Latina heritage.

The premiere will take place at the United Palace Theater in Manhattan, not far from the Bronx, where Lopez grew up as the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants. Lopez recently announced her engagement to actor Ben Affleck. She has two children from her marriage to musician Marc Anthony.

The Netflix streaming service wants to include “Halftime” in its program on June 14th. The Tribeca Film Festival will take place from June 8th to 19th this year. It was founded after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 by actor Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal.
