Triathlon Ingolstadt: New German champions wanted on the middle distance

2,700 triathletes from over 30 nations will start at the Audi Triathlon Ingolstadt powered by BÜCHL on Sunday, May 29, 2022, over the three distances offered (middle, Olympic, sprint). The middle distance of 1.9 km swimming, 80 km cycling and 20.9 km running will also award the German championship titles in the elite and in the age groups.

After the complete Corona cancellation in 2020 and the corona-related postponement of the date in the previous year, the race is now back on the original date for the start of the season. In addition, the participants and the fans can look forward to a lot of new things. For the first time, the bike course leads into Ingolstadt’s city center and, together with the running course, which was redesigned last year, and the extensive supporting program, will create a new atmosphere. “It was always my goal to revitalize the city center with the Ingolstadt Triathlon,” says event manager Gerhard Budy. Also new is the extensive sustainability concept that was developed together with the Institute for Applied Sustainability (inas).

Can Simon Huckestein repeat last year’s win?

And the faces of the German middle-distance champions will also be new on Sunday, since the defending champions of the previous year (the DM took place in Heilbronn in 2021) are not there. With Simon Huckestein (raceextract Racing Team), last year’s Ingolstadt winner over the middle distance. The Hessian is also one of the favorites this time. However, the competition is strong. Jens Frommhold (Triathlon Potsdam), Fabian Reuter (TuS Griesheim), Per van Vlerken (LC Dübener Heide), Niclas Bock (RSC Kempten) and Finn Große-Freese (SV Bayreuth) all want to get involved in the fight for the DM podium. In the race for overall victory, the German-Swiss Tom Hug (SV Bayreuth), who won the Ingolstadt half marathon at the same place at the beginning of May, could also take part.

Among the women are Franzi Reng (Soprema Team TSV Mannheim), who was already on the podium last year in Ingolstadt as second in the middle distance, Laura Chacon (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Maya Betz (SC Ostheim/Röhn), tenth in the Challenge Roth 2021, among the top favorites for the DM title in the elite class. Magda Nieuwoudt (Team Sirus Europe) should also have a good chance in the fight for overall victory. The South African, who is being trained by the three-time Ingolstadt winner Yvonne van Vlerken, was third on the podium at this year’s Ironman South Africa.
