Jan Frodeno made history as a triathlete. He won Olympic gold in 2008 and the Ironman in Hawaii three times. He will now be honored as a “Legend of Sports” at the German Sports Press Ball.
Frankfurt. Jan Frodeno will be awarded the Pegasos Prize in the “Legend of Sports” category at the 41st German Sports Press Ball on November 4th in Frankfurt.
With the Olympic victory in 2008 and the triumphs at the Ironman World Championships in 2015, 2016 and 2019, he has a “place in the history books,” said the organizers. The 42-year-old native of Rhineland’s record is “highly impressive, but what impressed us even more was the person.”
After long periods of injury and several hip operations, Frodeno competed in his last big race about a month ago with the Ironman World Championships in Nice and ended his triathlon career. The “Legend of Sport” honor has been awarded since 2007. The previous award winners included the track and field athletes Heide Ecker-Rosendahl, Ulrike Nasse-Meyfarth and Renate Stecher, the legendary striker Gerd Müller (posthumously) and Franz Beckenbauer, as well as the former tennis star Boris Becker and the Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt.
It had already been announced that the German national basketball team would be honored with the Pegasos Prize in the “Athletes with Heart” category for winning the world championship title. The “Sports Media” award winner will not be announced until the evening of the ball. With more than 2,100 expected guests from politics, media, show business and sport, including numerous international medal winners, the ball is one of the largest of its kind in Germany.
