Würzburg (dpa) – About a year after the killing of a seriously ill pensioner in Lower Franconia by her husband, those involved in the process are excited about the psychiatric report. This is likely to be presented to the Würzburg district court on Thursday (from 9:00 a.m.). In addition, it is possible that the pleading and judgment will follow on the same day.
A 92-year-old from Gemünden am Main (Main-Spessart district) is accused. The public prosecutor’s office accuses him of manslaughter “without being a murderer”. At the beginning of the trial, the man confessed that he had suffocated his emotionally and physically ill wife in bed with a rabbit skin blanket on November 3, 2019. In his own words, he was overwhelmed by the almost sole care of the 91-year-olds and acted out of love. After the crime, the pensioner tried in vain to kill himself.
It is questionable whether the man was less responsible for the crime. The prosecution suspects that the German killed his demented wife out of hopelessness because he could no longer lead a healthy and self-determined life with her. Perhaps the 92-year-old was severely depressed that evening. He has no criminal record and is not in custody.
The couple had been married for almost 70 years but had no children. According to statements by several witnesses before the jury chamber, the couple were very close to each other. “They were already fixated on each other,” said the defendant’s brother-in-law. “She’s been identical twins for the past few years.”
When the defendant’s wife continued to lose weight in recent years, her husband began to learn to cook with the help of the Internet. He also took care of the household, garden, personal hygiene of the 91-year-olds and visits to the doctor, said the 84-year-old.
On the evening of the fact, the couple had made themselves comfortable with a glass of wine by candlelight, according to a police officer. After the 92-year-old had suffocated his wife, he is said to have lain next to her for about an hour and said goodbye. Then he tried to kill himself. Paramedics found the desperate man who had called 911 himself.
