Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – The first trial around the riots on Frankfurt’s Opernplatz from last July is pending before the Frankfurt district court on Wednesday. A 20-year-old is charged with serious breach of the peace, attempted bodily harm and resistance to law enforcement officers. Among other things, he is said to have thrown a glass bottle at an officer and defended himself against his subsequent arrest.

The Opernplatz in the heart of Frankfurt had developed into an open-air party zone last summer due to closed clubs and discos. On the weekend of the incident, up to 3,500 people initially celebrated peacefully. In the early hours of the morning the officers and their vehicles were attacked. According to the public prosecutor’s office, five police officers are said to have been injured. In addition, the rioters are said to have caused property damage of at least 14,600 euros. The juvenile justice department of the local court wants to conclude the proceedings against the 20-year-old in just one day.
