Trial Postponed for Man Accused of Stabbing Writer Salman Rushdie Due to Pending Memoirs – BBC News

The trial of the man accused of stabbing writer Salman Rushdie has been postponed. That’s because of the writer’s memoirs that will be published soon. The suspect’s lawyers want to see the book before the case starts.

The 76-year-old writer was attacked on August 12, 2022 while giving a lecture in New York. He was seriously injured by stab wounds in his face, neck and abdomen and was on a ventilator for two days. Rushdie became blind in his right eye and can no longer use one hand.

The writer is best known for his controversial novel The Satanic Verses. The work sparked enormous anger among Muslims. They felt that the author had insulted the prophet Mohammed because he had human weaknesses in the book.

Jury selection was actually scheduled to begin next Monday in New York. However, lawyers for Hadi Matar, the defendant, argue that they have the right to study the writer’s memoirs for the case. It is not known when the case will resume, reports the BBC.

In the book Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder Rushdie tells more about the attack. It is expected to be released in April this year.
