Trial of Six Minors in Paris for Involvement in Samuel Paty’s Murder

Nov 27, 2023 at 5:51 AM Update: 16 minutes ago

The trial of six minors begins today in Paris for involvement in the murder of French teacher Samuel Paty. He was beheaded by an extremist in 2020 after showing cartoons of the Islamic prophet Mohammed in class.

That happened in a lesson about freedom of expression. A few days later, Paty was beheaded near his high school by an eighteen-year-old extremist. The perpetrator was shot dead by the police shortly after the murder.

Of the six minors allegedly involved in the murder, one girl allegedly admitted to lying about Paty’s lesson, according to French media. The then thirteen-year-old student stated at home that the teacher had asked all Muslims to leave the classroom during class. She claimed she was suspended after voicing criticism. But the girl allegedly did not attend the lesson at all.

She allegedly made up the story to keep the real reason for her suspension a secret from her parents. The allegation prompted the girl’s father to express anger about Paty on social media and call for action.

The five other suspects in the case are accused of standing guard at the school for a fee and pointing out Paty to the perpetrator. They were between fourteen and fifteen years old at the time.

The trial will take place behind closed doors at the juvenile court in Paris and will last until December 8.
