“Trial of Anti-Democratic Actors in Brazil Following January 8th Attack on National Institutions”

In this modality of analysis, the ministers of the superior court deposit the votes electronically and there is no face-to-face deliberation.

All the charges were presented by the Federal Attorney General’s Office and, in total, the body offered 1,390 complaints to the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Trial priority is being given to the defendants who are still in jail.

So far, 86 women and 208 men remain detained in the Federal District prison system for involvement in anti-democratic acts.

The defendants are accused of various violations, such as criminal association, attempted abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, attempted coup d’état, inciting the animosity of the Armed Forces against constitutional powers, depredation of fallen public assets and incitement to crime.

So far, the Attorney General’s Office has presented accusations taking into account three groups of criminals: those who invaded and looted public buildings, those who camped in front of the Army Headquarters to incite the Armed Forces, and the authorities who supposedly hid before the events.

With calls for military intervention and rejection of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s assumption of power, groups of radical supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro staged anti-democratic events on January 8 in Brasilia.

On that date, marked in black in national history, right-wing extremists violently broke in and looted the headquarters of the National Congress, the STF and the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Branch.

Bolsonaro will be heard on April 26 by the Federal Police (PF) within the framework of the investigations into the coup attempt.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, who responded to a request from the Attorney General’s Office, gave a period of 10 days for the PF to listen to the former ruler.

The researchers believe that a publication made by the far-right politician on January 11 would link him to the coup acts, since the message shared by him questioned, without evidence, the electoral system.

This movement was evaluated as a sign that the former Army captain was able to encourage violent actions and vandalism on the premises of the three powers.
