Trial of 83-Year-Old Woman Accused of Suffocating Demented Husband in Freiburg

In Freiburg, an 83-year-old woman from a community in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district is on trial. She is said to have suffocated her demented husband.

On the morning of January 2 this year, the accused pressed a washcloth into the face of her 88-year-old husband in their shared apartment. The defense attorney said this in a statement from his client at the beginning of the trial before the Freiburg district court. The woman acted out of pity, desperation and physical strain, her legal adviser explained on Wednesday morning. She was overwhelmed with the care. Shortly after the fact, she herself alerted the police. She now faces a charge of manslaughter. Considering the age of his client, the defense attorney asked that the proceedings be kept as short as possible.

The 83-year-old had also tried to get a foster home for her husband, which she received a few days before the crime. However, the woman did not want to put her husband in a home before Christmas. So she had to keep caring for him. It was also discussed in court that both spouses had thought about ending their lives together by driving their car into a truck. However, this idea was rejected because no third parties were wanted to be affected.
