Munich – The doctor Mark S. has been sentenced to a prison term of 4 years and 10 months and a professional ban of three years for doping. In the first major criminal case in Germany since the anti-doping law was introduced in 2015, the Munich Regional Court also found the four helpers of the Erfurt doctor guilty on Friday. In addition, the court ordered Mark S. to be banned from his profession for three years and a fine of 158,000 euros.
In their pleading, the public prosecutor’s office called for five and a half years in prison; The process, which lasted almost four months, was the first major “stress test” for the anti-doping law passed in 2015.
The co-defendants were also convicted. Dirk Q. received two years and four months probation, the nurse Diana S. one year and four months probation. The paramedic Sven M. (320 daily rates of 20 euros) and Ansgard S., father of Mark S. (280 daily rates of 35 euros), got away with fines.
On February 27, 2019, raids took place at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld and in Germany as part of Operation Aderlass. Mark S. has been in custody ever since, and that time counts towards his prison sentence.
A total of 23 athletes from eight countries were involved. Among other things, prominent sporting events such as the Olympic Games in 2014, 2016 and 2018, the Tour de France 2018, the Giro d’Italia 2016 and 2018, the Vuelta 2017, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 and various other cycling tours and winter sports events were affected.
