After almost a year’s imprisonment, Roelf B. and Gert-Jan N. appear in court on Monday morning at ten o’clock in Budapest. The two men from Stadskanaal are suspected of large-scale drug smuggling and trafficking.

During the hearing, a so-called pre-trial hearing, it becomes clear whether the two suspects agree with the criminal proposal from the Public Prosecution Service: eight years in prison for B., ten years for N. If they do not accept the proposal, the trial will continue.
Twenty pounds of drugs
B. and N. were caught selling drugs to other visitors on the grounds of the Sziget festival in the Hungarian capital last August. They were found to carry a total of 20 pounds of drugs, mainly ecstasy pills and marijuana cigarettes. Anti-drug laws in Hungary are strict: the maximum sentence is life-long.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) sees N. as the brain behind the crime. The two suspects have confessed to smuggling the drugs to sell them during the Sziget festival, but they don’t want to say who the supplier is. If they had, this would have made a significant difference in the sentence, the prosecution hinted earlier.
Transfer
B. and N. spent their pretrial detention in a detention center in the outskirts of Budapest. Once convicted, they are likely to be transferred to another prison.
If the criminal case is closed and the judgment is final, they as residents of the European Union have the right to request a transfer to the Netherlands to serve the rest of their sentence there. Moreover, their punishment will normally be converted to Dutch standards and will therefore be shorter.
Since the arrest of B. and N., the case has attracted a lot of attention in the Dutch media. Before his arrest, B. was known as a talented athlete at the national level.
