NEW YORK.- The trial against federal senator Bob Menéndez and his wife Nadine in a New York court, both accused of bribery and corruption, was set this Monday for May 6 of next year, while the Cuban-born legislator insists on his innocence and in not resigning from his position.
Menéndez did not attend the hearing today in the federal court for the southern district of New York in Manhattan to attend to matters related to his position in Washington, his defense indicated to Judge Sidney Stein who is presiding over the case, but his wife Naddine was present.
The judge asked the defense of the politician, who after the accusation resigned from the presidency of the Foreign Relations Committee, to deliver the evidence that seeks to exonerate him by December 4.
The Democratic senator, who represents New Jersey, and his wife, Nadine, were accused by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office on September 22 of accepting “hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes” in exchange for “protecting and enriching businessmen and benefiting the Government of Egypt”.
The bribes that the Menéndezes allegedly received from at least 2018 to 2022 were: cash, gold, payment of a mortgage, a job in which almost no presence was required for Nadine and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, which the senator has denied.
Also accused in this case are the businessmen who allegedly bribed Menéndez: Wael Hana, José Uribe and Fred Daibes.
Menendez, 69, is free on $100,000 bail; His wife has another one worth $250,000.
