The winter storm that will reach the tri-state area this weekend will bring accumulations of less than an inch for New York City but in other areas it will reach up to 6 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, snow or sleet is expected to begin falling in the tri-state area on Saturday, January 6 around 2:00 p.m.
Stephanie Viés, meteorologist for Los Guardianes del Tiempo, explained that New York City is expected to experience a winter mix, that is, snow, sleet and rain.
“For now it seems to indicate that the storm is going to reach a little further north and west of our area,” he said.
“We will be receiving what are more of the outer bands, that is, more winter-mixed precipitation. But there is the possibility of up to one and three inches of snow in some areas of the metropolitan area,” he explained.
While most of the city will have accumulations of a half inch during Saturday and Sunday, areas of New Jersey, Connecticut and the coastal area of New York may have more snow.
“Some of our counties, parts of Connecticut, also on the coast could receive between six inches and 12 inches,” Viés added.
The National Meteorological Service details that on Saturday starting at 2:00 in the afternoon there is a possibility of snow falling in the City and at 5:00 it is possible that it will be mixed with rain.
At night the chance of precipitation will be 90 percent and the temperature will be around 38 degrees Fahrenheit.
Rain and sleet are expected for Sunday morning.
The situation will change next Monday when the chances of precipitation are practically zero and with temperatures between 32 and 40 degrees.
