Tri-State Area to Receive Freezing Rain Before Weekend Warm-Up

NEW YORK — Parts of the tri-state area are expected to receive freezing rain starting Tuesday afternoon days before temperatures rise into the 50s just in time for the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather warning that expanded slightly further into the metropolitan area, however New York City is not included. The potential freezing rain threat is greater for some suburbs close to the city, such as in the higher elevations of Bergen, Morris, Rockland and Passaic counties.

We expect the wintry mix to continue through the afternoon with some bands falling Tuesday night into Wednesday morning impacting travel during these hours.

Another round of precipitation will approach on Wednesday afternoon, this time falling as rain due to temperatures that will rise to the 40s on Wednesday and the 50s for Thursday, Friday and into the weekend.

Extended forecast

  • Mars: Maximum: 39 degrees. Cloudy with a mix to the north, rain in New York City Tuesday afternoon and evening with lows in the 30s.
  • Wednesday: Maximum: 42 degrees. Cloudy with rain.
  • Thursday: Maximum: 51 degrees. Cloudy with rain.
  • Friday: Maximum: 56 degrees. Possible rain and warmer.
  • Saturday: Maximum: 50 degrees. Partly sunny.
