“Treviso among the cheapest provinces but prices are rising”

Up to now, going to the bar to enjoy a good espresso has no surprises: the average cost of a cup of coffee is still around 1.20 euros in all the capital cities of the Veneto. Only in Rovigo, most of the bars and pastry shops in the center have already raised the price of espresso, bringing it to one euro and thirty cents.

In the ranking of the most expensive cup, the city of Rovigo is followed by Padua and Vicenza (according to the Mise observatory the average cost is 1.18 euros for the first and 1.17 for the second); then from Venice (1.15 on average), and finally from Treviso and Verona (with an average of 1.13). If, with different frequencies, it is therefore still possible to find bars offering coffee at 1.10, it is nevertheless evident that all prices are aligning themselves upwards. The cup of coffee has always been a good indicator of the trend in price increases, so the Confesercenti Veneto Study Center tested, among associated public establishments and consumers, the current cost of espresso at the bar, which albeit with a range that varies – but slightly – from the city and suburbs, it is stable at 1.20. Still for a little while, say the entrepreneurs of the sector where now we proceed to “leopard spot”: many keep their coffee at the counter at 1.20, but then ask, for example, a surcharge for table service which varies between 1.50-1.70 per coffee. According to Confesercenti forecasts, in fact, before the summer, the price will also rise at the counter driven by the expensive bills and the prices of raw materials.

In Treviso

Vittorino De Vidi, owner of the bar Da Vittorino coffee shop to Olmi, he explains: «A year ago I brought the coffee to 1.20 and the brioche, since April, I have been selling it at 1.30, I try to limit the increases on breakfasts as much as possible. After all, coffee has always been the product that makes you make a turnover, but the product has grown heavily since the beginning of the year, not to mention the service when you serve it at the table, the ten cents more are correct. Think of when, with the lira, the cost of coffee and newspaper were always combined, one increased and the other also increased ».

The comment

“The situation of the supply outlets is not isolated, but reflects that of all the companies in the service sector struggling with the increase in the costs of energy, transport and raw materials” he concludes Cristina Giussani, president of Confesercenti Veneto. For the president of Confesercenti we are in fact facing a “perfect storm” which “requires greater flexibility in budgetary policies to adequately support businesses and citizens”. According to Giussani, with the war in Ukraine, the scenario and prospects have profoundly changed and it is therefore “urgent to intervene on the tax and contribution wedge to favor the adjustment of wages and support consumption. We must also act on tax and credit moratoriums to help businesses overcome this new moment of crisis “.
