Always believe, never give up! This is the mantra of Martina Trevisan who has centered the entry into the quarter-finals of the “Gran Prix Sar la Princesse Lalla Meryem”, WTA 250 tournament with a prize pool of $ 251,750 returned after two years of absence to compete on the red clay of Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old left-handed from Florencen.85 in the ranking, after leaving four games to the Chinese Xiaodi Yu, 295 WTA, coming from the qualifications, he beat in comeback for 26 64 61, at the end of a battle of almost two and a quarter hours, the Spanish Garbine Muguruza, n.10 in the ranking and first favorite in the seeding, who had asked for and obtained a wild card to put in the legs a few more matches in the perspective of Roland Garros. Under 62 3-1 Martina has won 11 of the last 13 games by signing the second career success against a top ten later the victory against Kiki Bertens in the round of 16 in Paris 2020.
There was no precedent between the two. Decisive departure of the Spaniard, protagonist of a first part of the season that is anything but exciting: Muguruza has twice snatched the serve from the blue and climbed 4-1. Martina recovered one of the two breaks (4-2) but Garbine secured the first set (6-2) with another break. Trevisan gave up his service again at the start of the second fraction but immediately scored the counter-break (1-1). But then it was again the service that penalized her and the Spaniard extended to 3-1, an excessive advantage (set and break) to be honest. And in fact, suddenly, the game was over: Trevisan started to be more aggressive right from the response, she dominated the exchanges from the backhand side while Muguruza’s second serve became a real ATM. With a partial of five games to one Martina equalized the set count (6-4) and then in the decisive fraction there was no more history with Garbine who in extremis only managed to avoid the “bagel” (6-1 ).
Thursday in the quarters – the second in career for her after the fantastic ones at Roland Garros 2020 – Trevisan will find the Dutchman Arantxa Rus on the other side of the net, 75 in the ranking and seventh favorite in seeding. Two equal the balance of the precedents between the left-handed from Florence and the 31-year-old from Delft.
