Trevi Fountain: No more coin tossing in the historic fountain –

The Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri and the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Gianluca Honorato, today detailed the effort to limit over-tourism around the world-famous Trevi Fountain.

As announced, the relevant changes will take effect from the first months of 2025 and there will be an experimental period of application of the new rules. The fountain will be protected by transparent partitions, while an elevated “passage”, a kind of semi-circular catwalk, will be created, which will allow visitors to get very close to the water.

Access to the “catwalk” will not be unlimited, but there will be a maximum number of visitors. Who, very soon, will no longer be able to throw coins into the “Fountain”, turned “back”, but will have to leave them in a special basket. It will be a safer, but certainly less impressive practice.

In the future, it is possible to take into account the imposition of a low ticket, so that anyone can admire this eighteenth century fountain up close. Online booking will also not be available at this time. The entrance to the front of the Trevi Fountain will be regulated by officials who will ensure that there is no overcrowding, with a limit on the number of entries.

Finally, tourists are soon to be banned from eating sandwiches and drinking soft drinks while sitting on the steps at the top of the fountain.
