I have to admit that I’m rarely that surprised when I start a production. I didn’t expect anything extraordinary from Trepang2, but it’s a position that you can definitely like. Especially when we are turned on by slightly more terrifying climates. The shooter reviewed today is a spiritual heir to FEAR released in 2005, and it is with this game that I associate it the most. But it has a lot of its original solutions.
Sometimes I feel like going back to shooters from the old days, where the basis of the game was just having fun. Trepang2 is the perfect answer to this need. Here, we focus primarily on eliminating dozens of enemies coming from every direction every bit, but it’s all done with a very nice feel, appropriate epicness, and here and there with a thrill of terror. The game is heavily focused on fast-paced action, but it also has some interesting solutions, such as the impressive slowdown of time, like in the iconic Max Payne 3. It does not cost a fortune, about PLN 130, and guarantees about 8 hours of fun. For such a configuration, it is definitely worth getting interested in this title. I played Trepang2 on a powerful PC, but the item does not have excessive hardware requirements.
The story contained in this game is unfortunately its weakest point, although it ties the hero’s motives together
In Trepang2 we play the role of a super soldier marked with the number 106, working for the 27th secret strike group. We escape from a chilled and isolated prison somewhere in the underground of frosty Alaska, and then finish off all the villains belonging to the corrupt Horizon corporation. They are responsible for attempting illegal experiments on humans to create a new army of super soldiers. Our goal, of course, is to kill everyone, defeat the leader of this organization and bring order to the world, preventing the creation of more cells of warriors who could affect the world order. In a word – there is nothing surprising or delightful in this story, and the story has obviously been neglected, but it is not the plot that plays the main role here. I don’t have much of a problem with that, because in such games I don’t expect touching moments or meaningful moments that will force me to reflect. He just wants to have fun.
The game features here and there classic “jump-scars” straight from titles from the beginning of this century, i.e. occasional encounters with terrifying monsters that jump out at the hero when least expected. reviewed Trepang2 it’s kind of like that survival-horrorbut also a psychedelic story about survival in an extremely strange, slightly scary and damaged world. Although there is no colorful emphasis on the element of horror, there is also no motif of the character responsible for these strange events, such as Alma Wade from FEAR, but nevertheless Trepang2 instantly reminded me of the wonderful year 2005, also in terms of gameplay mechanics. What makes me particularly happy is the fact that in the game reviewed today we will not find boring and drawn out moments, like in Doom 3. Here the action literally falls off the sleeve, and the shooting is every bit. On the one hand, I think it’s a good thing that the game is so short, because more non-stop massacre could tire you out in the long run.
The boss fights deserve praise, often quite well thought out, although quite simple in their structure. I don’t want to throw spoilers, but I have to admit that when I saw some of the solutions, I was very satisfied, because the duel didn’t force me to mess around and wipe the sweat off my forehead, and was a nice diversion and a springboard from killing the existing cannon fodder. Of course, as it happens in every shooter, along the way we will find additional equipment that will be used to modify the weapon. There are also hidden intel here and there to better understand what is going on with the Horizon Corporation and why it acts according to one or another motive. Like the whole plot, these fragments were not particularly interesting for me – just, their presence is obvious, although redundant. The super-soldier we control deals with enemies with such ease that sometimes on the radio we can hear the amazed voices of comrades from the same brigade, how powerful and indestructible we are. You can feel like Marcus Fenix or more like Doom Slayer, which in itself I consider a big advantage.
In Trepang2 we meet thousands of enemies, sometimes there are a lot of them in one location
The construction of the levels has been adapted to the design of the gameplay. Every bit, we will meet dozens of enemies on our way, with whom we have to deal with literally in a few dozen seconds. This theme is a write-out taken from the last Doom Eternal, which the developers seem to be modeling on to some extent. The artificial intelligence of the opponents is surprisingly good, because they can cooperate with each other, flank, use their strengths or hide and successfully avoid our projectiles. As part of the mechanics provided by the creators, we can also be tempted to leave a trap for some opponents. It is also possible to sneak and sneak under the cover of night and shadows, but it is much more satisfying to simply exchange fire. Interestingly, in addition to slowing down time, we can also use the “invisibility” skill, but its recovery time is quite long, so we often don’t want to wait and just move forward with a full magazine.
What is important, the creators from the Trepang studio have prepared a very large arsenal of weapons, each of which has specific properties and usefulness on the battlefield (which I consider a big advantage). You have to aim for the head often here, because the enemies you encounter use large shields or armor, which makes them difficult to eliminate in other ways. We can hold powerful guns in two hands (but only occasionally, which is an interesting and epic solution), chop opponents with powerful shotguns or eliminate them one by one with a very accurate and deadly sniper rifle. Trepang2 reviewed today, despite its scary and slightly terrifying atmosphere, is also a bit satirical and often presented in an absurd, exaggerated waywhich was clearly the intention of the developers. Even the animation of reloading two shotguns held in two hands is so comical, but at the same time so satisfying that here literally beats the design and its implementation.
Unfortunately, there are a few spoonfuls of tar in this whole barrel of honey, but these are perhaps not great flaws. Weapons, although we can modify them, unfortunately only at certain times. You can’t add anything during the fight (like a silencer or a flashlight in Crysis, or change the assumptions, like in Doom Eternal, replacing the shotgun with exploding grenades). Fortunately, from time to time on the road we will find special boxes that will allow us to make appropriate changes, although you have to do it wisely to try to match the guns to the incoming opponents. We will also find various types of grenades, throwing knives or mines, but what’s interesting, we can only carry one type at a time, so it’s impossible to throw a frag grenade first and then kill someone with a handy knife. Either one or the other until manually changed by the player. It’s also pretty uneven graphically. There are excellently designed levels, interspersed with locations reminiscent of games from the beginning of this century. It’s quite surprising, but in general I treated such levels in terms of a nostalgic return to the past, despite the much worse setting. There were also times when defeated enemies fell under the textures, but on the other hand, during the shootout everything around is falling apart and falling apart, as in the Killzone series, which intensifies the experience of the exchange of fire.
Trepang2 is a surprisingly good, dynamic and action-packed shooter
If you are looking for something unusual, fast and dynamic, the Trepang2 reviewed today should meet your expectations in 100%. This is a game that cannot get bored, because the exchange of fire is literally every bit. If you liked the formula served in Doom Eternal, you can say that Trepang2 is very similar to it, while serving solutions and atmosphere taken straight from FEAR from 2005. We can sneak around and eliminate enemies from hiding, and every now and then we will come across a terrifying moment that can send shivers down our spines. The corpse is dense, the guns are satisfying, some locations can be liked, and the game does not hide its absurd climate, showing that you cannot believe everything you see on the screen. I also appreciate the really minimal interface. On the screen we see only the most important information. The biggest drawback is the really uninteresting story and the whole envelope, as well as the time of the game. Although after thinking about it for a long time, I admit that if it lasted longer than 8-10 hours, I would probably feel a lot of material fatigue. Doom Eternal, in my opinion, was too long, and the ending exhausted me completely. In Trepang2, the whole thing ends efficiently and quickly, leaving behind a pleasant feeling of sweet satisfaction.
