Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
Trend of increasing cases of infection Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the last five years in Indonesia is dominated by relational behavior sexual same sex.
This was conveyed by doctor Ratia Ayuningtyas from the DKI Jakarta Health Service in media briefing National Children’s Day 2023 in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, Thursday (20/7).
“Now there is an increasing male trend [berhubungan] sex with men. It continues to increase, indeed we find many who are infected [HIV] because of this sexual behavior,” said Tia.
This trend, continued Tia, is not only happening in Jakarta, but in almost all parts of Indonesia.
In this case, the sexual behavior in question refers to anal sex between men.
This risk arises because wounds on the anus are more easily formed due to penetration. In contrast to penetration which is done through the vagina, the presence of a natural ‘lubricant’ will make it easier for the penis to enter.
Conversely, when having sex through the anus, natural lubricants will not appear. As a result, there is stronger friction and wounds will form more easily.
“Maybe yes [bisa] use that extraordinary lubricant, but still the occurrence of injuries is more likely,” he said.
However, Tia could not detail the number of HIV cases that were triggered by same-sex sexual behavior in the last five years. What is certain, he continued, is that the number is more than 60 percent of the total currently recorded HIV cases.
“The point is that around 60 percent of detected HIV cases are due to this behavior. Reports from the health center and health facilities are the facts on the ground,” he said.
Currently, the DKI Jakarta Health Office records that the total number of HIV cases as of March 2023 has reached 79,628 people. Of these figures, 6,573 people were declared dead and 9,811 lost contact without treatment.
