Trench (five-day) fever is an acute infectious disease occurring in the form of either continuous fever, or its attacks with a temperature of up to 40 degrees and a rash. The carrier is a body louse – infection occurs when an insect bites.

During the world wars, it was widespread in the trenches among the soldiers because of the unsanitary conditions prevailing there. During the First World War, about 1 million people fell ill with this disease. As a rule, trench fever is not fatal, but is fraught with serious complications.

It was previously reported that in India about 300 people are hospitalized due to an unknown disease. People who fall ill in the city of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, have a variety of symptoms, from nausea to seizures and loss of consciousness.
