On Wednesday in the Christmas season, shop owner Andreas Johan Berge was on his way home the hour and a half long drive from Husnes in Kvinnherad to Odda.

– I was driving down a hill when a tree suddenly came towards me. I stood on the brake, but there was no reaction in the car to the slippery road, he says.

Relatively undamaged
Andreas Johan Berge called the emergency number and was able to get out of the car relatively unscathed. The pictures of his Mini show that the car is badly damaged, especially on the driver’s side.
– Given the damage to the cars, I suffered little damage, says Andreas Johan Berge.

The tree blocked the road for an hour after the accident.

Almost the same place
It is not the first time that Andreas John Berge has been involved in a traffic accident on the stretch.
On a dark September evening in 2020, just a couple of kilometers away, a deer came up from the water’s edge “where it didn’t used to go”, he says.
In his Peugeot van, he also stood on the brakes this time. He avoided the deer, but the car overturned and ended up in a stream.
– It went perfectly fine, I held on to the steering wheel when I saw where it was going.
If he could have done something differently?
– As for the tree, it is difficult to say, as it fell on top of me when I was driving. If I had driven faster, the tree could have missed, if I had driven slower it might have hit the front of the car, he replies.
– Can’t be anxious
There was no police case and the car was then picked up by crew from Vinterveien’s heroes, says the accident bird.
– Have you become anxious about driving?
– Can’t do that here in the district. All roads out of Odda, you drive with your life as an effort, is the straight answer.
He drives an hour and a half each way between his home and Hunses, where he runs a Bunnpris shop.
He adds:
– The road has many sharp bends and is narrow, so you have to keep your eyes open. It is not very often that trees fall across the road, it is more common for the road to be closed as a result of falling rocks.
