Brooke Atking (33) from Queensland in Australia is a stay-at-home mother. Together with her partner, she has daughter Amarni (2) and their six-month-old son, Kingsley.
When Kingsley came into the world in January, the family quickly discovered the red birthmark that covered half his face.
The birthmark turned out to be a port wine stain, according to the Jam Press news agency.

Rare syndrome
Port wine stains are normally harmless, but in some cases they can be a symptom of the rare disease Sturge-Weber syndrome, according to Health Norway.
Sturge-Weber syndrome is malformations of blood vessels in the skin, meninges and eyes.

When the hospital took samples from Kingsley, he was diagnosed with Sturge Weber’s Syndrome and glaucoma.
According to Helse-Norge, the syndrome can lead to glaucoma, epilepsy, birthmarks, heart attack-like episodes and other neurological disorders.
Laser treatment
On 31 May, the family decided to start laser treatment on the birthmark.
According to Jam Press, Kingsley’s parents want to prevent the birthmark from getting thicker and darker, which can cause it to start bleeding uncontrollably.

– It is almost impossible to treat a port wine stain when it has reached that stage, then the skin has already been damaged too much, Atking says.

The choice to give her son laser treatment is being slammed hard by the online trolls who call her a bad mother, according to the news agency.
Mora claims that people think that she is concerned with her son’s appearance, and that he is not “nice enough” with the birthmark.

Mora says that when she first started reading the hate comments, she cried for an hour and a half.
Over 20 hospital visits
According to the news agency, Kingsley has visited two hospitals for treatment.
He has made over 20 hospital visits, met over ten different specialists and doctors and visited five different medical departments.
In less than six months, the little boy has had three MRI examinations, an ultrasound, two hearing tests, two operations and two laser treatments.
