The Order of Physicians is appealing to all doctors to participate on a voluntary basis in the care of Covid-19 in hospitals and in treatment centers, at times that suit them. “Doctors are overwhelmed and tired. It would be nice if health workers took turns in hospitals, otherwise the coronavirus disease is going to wipe us out. The accumulation of fatigue can be fatal, in the event of coronavirus disease ”, underlines the president of the medical order, Dr. Eric Andrianasolo, yesterday.
These supports are not refused. “Staying awake for 24 hours, every four days, with patients who need permanent monitoring, it’s exhausting,” said a doctor from a resuscitation department of a hospital in the city of Antananarivo yesterday. He complained of fatigue. Health professionals on the front lines of the fight against the coronavirus affirm the heaviness of the tasks. “We need support to further improve the quality of care,” said another doctor.
The state has recruited several doctors, in the face of the increase in cases. But the needs would not yet be met. “The vast majority of doctors are already busy somewhere. Some are in public hospitals, others in private clinics. There are very few doctors left without a post at present. We don’t know how this epidemic will evolve. We will not be able to increase the number of doctors overnight. This is why we are asking everyone to mobilize in this fight, ”adds Dr Eric Andrianasolo.
Several doctors have already contracted the Covid-19 virus, in this second wave of the epidemic. Some have developed severe forms of the disease. Others have succumbed.
