Following the large-scale landslide that occurred on January 26 on the Salazie road – RD48 at PR 7+650 at a place called the Bishop sector – a helicopter inspection was carried out with the BRGM.
This incident was caused by the intense rains.
Significant residual risks in the area were observed as well as a partial collapse of the roadway downstream.
Also, on the recommendations of the BRGM, work to secure the cliff has started for a duration that cannot yet be estimated. Pavement repair work will be undertaken as soon as the slope is secure.
Dealing with this exceptional event requires appropriate traffic management on the RD48.
In order not to completely block access to the circus of Salazie, the Department has set up since yesterday, three opening slots of the road under alternation:
7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m.; 12 p.m.-1 p.m. and 5 p.m.-6 p.m.
However, taking into account the recommendations of the BRGM, these openings can only take place subject to favorable weather conditions. In the event of rain, the risk of another landslide is very high and the road must remain closed for the safety of users.
The Department is aware of the significant inconvenience that this exceptional natural event causes and is doing everything possible to restore normal traffic conditions as quickly as possible.
The greatest vigilance and respect for the instructions and signs put in place are required of all.
It is recalled the greatest caution and the limitation of travel on mountain roads, during periods of heavy rain.
