Treatment of Cancer with Chemotherapy, What is it?

KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. There are various treatments for cancer, such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination. It depends on what type of cancer the sufferer has.

“As we know that the body consists of a collection of organs where the organs are composed of body tissues. And body tissues are composed of a collection of cells. Meanwhile, for body cells that develop uncontrollably/abnormally, it is called cancer,” said the doctor. Harlinda Haroen in the Health Talk event on Cancer Management with Chemotherapy held by Siloam Hospital Manado, Friday (18/2).

“The characteristics of cancer cells are that they grow very fast compared to normal cells and damage surrounding organs and can spread to mutate,” said the Internal Medicine Specialist, Consultant Hematology Oncology Medical.

Cancer consists of two types, namely hemopoietic cancer (blood cancer) and lymphopoietic cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma. And there are solid cancers (solid), such as malignant tumors in the breast, lung, and prostate.

Chemotherapy is a procedure to treat cancer by eradicating cancer cells in the patient’s body using drugs. These drugs work by killing, preventing the spread, or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Chemotherapy treatment can be given either orally in the form of drugs taken orally, or in the form of injections such as through an IV.

“Chemotherapy works on proliferating cells, which means cells that always grow continuously, such as in hair, for cells that do not proliferate, such as muscle, bone, nerve and brain cells,” said Dr. Harlinda.

Chemotherapy is intended to cure cancers such as leukemia. Prolongs life and prolongs cancer-free intervals, and stops cancer progression. Can shrink the volume of cancer, and as palliative therapy and relieve drug-induced symptoms.
