When bitten by a tomcat, Mother or your little one may immediately scratch it because of the itching and burning sensation it causes. But don’t scratch it, OK, Mother. Try to follow the first aid guide for treating tomcat bites so as not to worsen the skin condition after being bitten by a tomcat.
Tomcat was endemic in Indonesia in 2012, especially in East Java. Tomcat is a beetle-like insect that is known to be poisonous. Tomato bites can cause skin reactions, including irritation, redness, and a burning sensation.
Tomcat has a body shape like an ant with a blend of orange and black. In contrast to ants, the body of the tomcat is often touted to be similar to that of a combat locust.
Tomcat including explorer beetles that live in waterways. However, it often moves to a dry place when it rains, so Mother needs to be vigilant during the rainy season.
According to the journal Tropical Biomedicine, the toxic substance in tomcat is hemolim or pederin poison. It is said to be 12 times stronger than a venomous snake bite.
No wonder the tomcat bite can cause severe skin irritation. Therefore, you need to understand first aid to treat tomcat bites.
First aid for treating tomcat bites
1. Find an edged object to release the poison
Quoting from Healthline, this is common when bitten by insects, including tomcat. If you see that the stinger (poison) of the insect is still embedded in the skin, then remove it by gently scraping it with an edged object (for example a credit card or KTP).
The point is that the poison does not spread much. But avoid using tweezers because if you press it directly it can spread.
Nor do you scratch the tomcat bite area because it can make the poison spread faster and of course worsen your condition.
2. Clean the tomcat bite area
Clean the tomcat bite area with soap and water. The goal, of course, is to reduce the amount of poison that enters your body.
3. Cold compress
Place a cold pack or ice pack on the area for about 10 minutes at a time to help reduce pain and swelling. Wrap ice or an ice bag in a clean cloth to protect your skin.
4. Apply lotion
Apply a lotion containing calamine or a paste of baking soda and water to the area several times a day. Use it to help relieve itching and pain.
Calamine lotion is a type of antihistamine cream that helps relieve the symptoms of insect bites, including tomcat. You can also use aloe vera cream which helps deal with irritation.
Mild and severe symptoms if bitten by tomcat
When bitten by a tomato or any insect, you may experience mild symptoms if there are no medical indications or other medical history. However, some people experience severe symptoms due to insect or tomcat bites.
The body reacts to toxins or other proteins injected by the tomcat. The poison is transferred to Mother’s body through her saliva. This can result in mild to severe symptoms at the site of the bite or sting.
Mild symptoms due to tomcat bites
Redness Blisters Pain Itching Burning sensation on the skin
Some people also develop a severe allergic reaction to a tomato sting or bite. Insect allergies are very common and may occur in you or your children.
Severe symptoms due to tomcat bites
Itching Stomach cramps Nausea and vomiting Swelling or blisters on your face, lips or throat Shortness of breath
If you or someone you know starts experiencing these symptoms immediately after being bitten by a tomcat, contact your doctor or local emergency services. A severe allergic reaction that affects many parts of your body is called anaphylaxis. This can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.
If you’ve ever had a severe reaction to an insect bite, consider discussing an allergy test with your doctor. If you have been diagnosed with a severe allergy, your doctor will prescribe a drug called epinephrine.
Mothers can use an epinephrine auto-injector to inject the drug into the outer thigh muscles when they are bitten by a tomato. These drugs act quickly to increase blood pressure, stimulate the heart, and reduce swelling of the airways.
You have to take it with you all the time, especially when you are outdoors where you might find bitten by tomcats or other insects.
Although often harmless, tomcat bites can cause blisters to blacken the skin. The burning feeling from the bite of the tomcat can also make you uncomfortable.
If Mother feels her body itches because of germs or bacteria, try bathing using an antiseptic liquid. You can buy it at LazMall Daily! A place to shop for daily needs from various stores, only pay 1 postage!
