When Heleen gets a video post on Tiktok about the eczema and the B12 treatment, it releases a lot. People want to know her experience, but there are also shocked reactions. “It’s unfortunate that it’s not so well known because people quickly think it’s dirty. It’s not contagious, just a flaw in your DNA. And it is especially bad for yourself.” As a child, Heleen mainly suffers from the nasty reactions, now she can shake that off more easily. “Parents, for example, didn’t let their child play in the same pool as me, because they thought their child would get it too.”
Hormones
Heleen has several reasons why she does not want hormone treatment (anymore), but her wish to have children is the most important at the moment. “I’m getting married in September so I want the eczema to be gone before that. But after that we would like to try to get pregnant and then I don’t want to put something on my body or inject something that could make that more difficult.” In the past she has noticed that prednisone and hormone ointments affect her normally perfectly regular cycle. “If we hadn’t wanted to have children, I would have done hormone treatment before the wedding to get rid of it in the short term.”
The bride-to-be would therefore like to find an alternative, also to be able to apply it during the hay fever seasons in the future. Because hormone ointments can eventually cause thin skin: “with all the consequences that entails”. So Helen wants to stay away from that as much as possible. “My skin is just chronically defective, it runs in my family. So what I’ve tried so far has mainly been symptom relief rather than a long-term solution.”
Eczema and hay fever
Because her GP cannot do much more than prescribe hormone ointments and hay fever tablets, Heleen starts looking for ways to improve her situation. “I am very curious and read a lot of scientific studies.” By coincidence, she reads a reaction from someone who has been rid of it by B12 injections under a news item about hay fever. “I presented it to my doctor and I was allowed to try it because I have already tried all the other options and went through all the treatments with a dermatologist.” Heleens GP does indicate that he is skeptical about the effect of the syringes with regard to eczema and hay fever, but agrees. “I am very grateful to my doctor for that. And there are no risks involved, so it was worth a try.”
Heleen’s eczema is quite visible, so it is also a regular topic of conversation in her salon. “One of my clients said that it could also help not to eat raw tomatoes and raw peppers. So I don’t do that anymore.” This has to do with cross-reactions between food and hay fever, Heleen explains. She’s happy to try any tricks—that don’t involve any risks—if there’s even a slight chance it will help.
Wonderful
In order to really measure the result, Heleen no longer takes allergy pills. Because the eczema outbreaks are clearly related to hay fever. Heleen has now completed five B12 injections. “I suspect it works. I have never had so little eczema during the hay fever season as I do now. It really is a bizarre difference.”
Despite the fact that she just goes to her horse and the pollen density is high, extreme outbreaks like earlier this year have not happened. “It’s actually amazing that now, five weeks later, it’s already a hundred times better.” Heleen is going to finish her treatment and hopes that the eczema will remain under control. “I hope that the extreme outbreaks are a thing of the past. In any case, I have confidence in this.”
