Treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy: An Effective Non-Surgical Approach

[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition in which the carpal tunnel narrows under pressure and causes pain. The carpal tunnel is a small passage formed by the bones and ligaments that make up the wrist under the skin tissue on the front of the wrist. Nine tendons and one nerve, the median nerve, pass through this carpal tunnel.

When the carpal tunnel is narrowed and the median nerve is compressed, symptoms of numbness or numbness occur in the area where the median nerve connects. The thumb, second finger, and third finger. In addition, you may feel stiffness in your wrists or palms, and symptoms such as stiff hands or convulsions may occur.

Woo Si-won, director of Yeosu Cool Madi Clinic, said, “Carpal tunnel syndrome can appear due to prolonged use of computers and smartphones. When using a computer keyboard or mouse, the wrist bends more than usual, and this repetitive action gives pressure and narrows the carpal tunnel.”

The same goes for holding and using a smartphone. Most of the cases are neglected even if pain occurs in the wrist, but if the pain occurs intermittently and carpal tunnel syndrome is suspected, it is important to visit the hospital and get an accurate diagnosis.

If you visit a hospital in the early stages of symptoms and receive treatment, symptoms can be alleviated with medication, injection therapy, physical therapy, and extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, a representative non-surgical treatment, has the advantage that it can be treated safely because it does not require incision or anesthesia.

Extracorporeal shock waves are a method of continuously applying shocks to the painful area for about 1500 to 2000 times. In addition to carpal tunnel syndrome, it is a method that can be applied to patients who complain of wrist fractures or carpal nerve infections.

Director Woo said, “Extracorporeal shock wave therapy has almost no side effects, but depending on the individual, itching or swelling may occur. For this reason, it is recommended to carry out after sufficient consultation with a specialist. After treatment, it is important to prevent recurrence through lifestyle improvement.”
