JAKARTA – Acne is not appropriate when treated only with cosmetic skincare. Acne is basically a disease that must be treated seriously and correctly, in accordance with the rules of medical treatment like other infectious diseases in general.

According to Pramudia Clinic’s Dermatology and Gender Specialist, dr. Anthony Handoko, SpKK, FINSDV, there are currently a lot of untrue myths about acne. For example, acne is only experienced in adolescence, acne only occurs in the face area, and acne must be squeezed and its contents removed to be complete.

“There is also a view that acne can be treated with skincare or facials at the salon, acne is caused by eating certain foods, acne only occurs during menstruation and usually goes away on its own. others who are not known medically,” said dr. Anthony Handoko in a recent health webinar.

“Even though scientific facts record that acne or medically called acne vulgaris, actually belongs to a group of skin infectious diseases caused by bacteria. In addition, acne is also caused by a combination of several causes, including the inflammatory process, excessive sebum oil gland production, hormonal imbalance, and blockage of the oil glands in the skin.

There is no definite and accurate prevalence rate for this acne disease, especially in Indonesia. But rationally, because one of the contributing factors is blockage of the sebaceous/oil gland outlet and excessive oil production by these glands in hot temperatures, it is very natural that acne cases occur very high in people who live in tropical areas, such as Indonesia.

Doctor Anthony Handoko added that there are many risk factors for acne, including lifestyle, air temperature, mental health and stress levels, personal hygiene, patient commitment and obedience in treatment, genetic factors, awareness, and the correct mindset of the patient towards this disease.

“The cause of acne is not caused by one thing alone, but is the result of a combination of several causes and risk factors, including the patient’s lifestyle. In addition, the most important thing is the patient’s understanding and mindset is correct, not taking acne disease lightly and the patient understands where to get the right treatment,” he explained.

In terms of shape, acne can be categorized as small pimples, pus, and large bumps. In terms of location, acne can occur on the face, chest, back, and arms.

“Treatment of correct acne is a treatment whose progress is measurable. Treatment should be given gradually in the medium to long term, not with instant medication. Because acne treatment is a measurable treatment, it is not true if the drug used is repeated the same medication indefinitely, such as using cosmetics/over-the-counter drugs/makeup,” explained Dr. Anthony Handoko.

It is also important to provide proper education to the general public to be able to differentiate between skincare and skin treatment. Skincare, explained dr. Anthony Handoko, is a care/cosmetic product that is sold over-the-counter without a prescription for skin conditions that are not problematic. Meanwhile, skin treatment is treatment by giving drugs that require a doctor’s prescription, both oral drugs and topical/topical drugs as well as specialist medical actions.
