Treasure or junk? Unclaimed Luggage Goes Up for Sale in New York – NBC New York

For the first time ever, the nation’s only lost luggage retailer is hosting a one-of-a-kind silent auction in New York City this weekend, and it’s all for a good cause.

On Sunday at the Greenpoint Terminal Market, Unclaimed Baggage will auction off a Samsonite carry-on containing more than 10 luxury items, including designer sunglasses, Airpods, an iPad and a designer scarf, among other select items. The silent auction will take place from 11 am to 1 pm with a starting bid of $500.

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to The Bowery Mission, which benefits New Yorkers affected by homelessness and hunger.

The organization, which will host several events in different locations around the city, will also provide the opportunity to participate in different activities, including: exploring the “Museo de las Rarezas”, which is a collection of the strangest items discovered in suitcases lost to over the years. There will also be a replica of the famous 1965 Chevy pickup, which picked up the first lost luggage in 1970. There will also be games and a raffle for a chance to win a trip to the unclaimed luggage store in Scottsboro, Alabama.

The Unclaimed Baggage Store was founded 50 years ago. The retailer, in partnership with national airlines, recovers lost luggage to resell, reuse or recycle the items.

The unclaimed baggage store receives more than a million visitors a year.

Auction events will take place this weekend at the following locations:

  • Bleecker Street Festival – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
