ISLAMABAD: Two retired Pakistani army officers were court-martialed and sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment on charges of sedition. Major (retd) Adil Farooq Raja and Capt (retd) Haider Raza Mehdi, who are living abroad and critical of the senior army leadership, were punished in their absence.
The Army said in a statement that they were convicted by a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, for inciting army personnel to commit treason. Apart from treason, they have also been charged with espionage.
Major Raja was sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment and Captain Mehdi was sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment. The Dawn newspaper reported that the two are unlikely to face punishment as they are out of the country.
There are also reports that the convictions are related to the nationwide violence following the arrest of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Party Chairman Imran Khan.
