Tre Valli Varesine, the runners stop, the race is cancelled: what happened

With a sensational and unprecedented decision by the runners, the Three Valleys Varesine 2024 it was cancelled. The race started with a route already shortened by the organizers, but rain and cold hammered the group from the start and did not improve as the race progressed. At the third passage under the arrival banner, after about fifty kilometres, the group stopped. After some teams moved towards their respective means of transport and support, the decision to cancel the race was made official.

The world champion was also at the start of the race Tadej Pogacar and Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel. “Everyone wanted to stop,” said Pogacar, “it was just a question of which lap someone would fall. There was too much water and even the manholes were full, there was nothing that could be done. The women’s race had been held a couple of hours earlier in very difficult conditions and had seen the success of the French Kerbaol. Race shortened to just one lap of the final circuit.
