Traxio Reports Record-breaking Second-Hand Car Sales for 2023

After a final sales boost in December, mobility federation Traxio will have sold 689,170 second-hand passenger cars in 2023. That is 7.5 percent more than in 2022. Because a large number of new cars were delivered, the influx of recent used cars increased.

Second-hand sales are therefore still developing favourably, Traxio emphasizes. The market partly owes this to stagnant or even slightly falling prices. A series of new cars also increased the range of second-hand sales. The average age of the Belgian fleet has now reached almost ten years, while the registered used cars were also quite old, a median of almost eight years.

The second-hand market is dominated by petrol engines (54 percent). As with new cars, the share of diesel engines is also decreasing here. This year it is 35.6 percent. Hybrids account for 8.1 percent. “We are curious about the effect of the premium for second-hand electric cars in Flanders in the coming months,” says Traxio. “That market segment is currently still highly underrepresented at just 1.8 percent.”

Volkswagen and BMW were the most sold brands of second-hand passenger cars in 2023. The VW Golf is still in the lead with 28,710 units and the VW Polo with 20,520 units. The Opel Corsa (19,131), the BMW 3-series (16,309) and the Ford Fiesta (14,451) stick to their bumper.
