Trawlers burst into quay facilities in Tromsø

IT WAS THAT QUAY: Here the trawler hit the quay on Kvaløya in Tromsø.

This is what it looks like after the large trawler “Senja” burst into the quay in Tromsø late on Wednesday evening.

The 80-metre-long and 17-metre-wide fishing boat dragged parts of the quay with it before it stopped.

The accident happened because the boat lost engine power on its way south towards Rystraumen, confirms Kenneth Holmøy in Nergård sea fishing to Northern Lights.

– There was a blackout on the whole boat, they had nothing to help themselves with, he says Coast and Fjord.

– How did the crew experience this?

– All ground collisions are dramatic, and it was of course dramatic for them in
the wheelhouse which tried to avert it, but for the crew who were sleeping it was not particularly dramatic. But there was frantic work in the wheelhouse and the engine to avoid that, Holmøy replies.

He does not know how long it took from the time the boat lost momentum until it hit land.
The main rescue center was initially responsible for the situation, but left this to the Coastal Administration, as there was no danger to life or health.

No leaks and no risk of contamination should be observed.

“Senja” is Nergård Havfiske’s second newest boat. The 80 meters long and 17 meters
The wide trawler was christened in autumn 2020, and then had a price tag of around NOK 400 million, writes ITromsø.

The boat was built by Vard Brattvåg. “Senja” is a freezer trawler with options for taking part of the cargo fresh. It normally operates with a crew of 20 people. The collision involved both the seabed and parts of the quay.

FULL STOP: Here the large trawler has hit land.,

The accident happened just before 11pm on Wednesday evening.

– All things considered, it has gone well with the people, and then it remains to be seen
how the boat is doing. We will be towed free when the tide is high, and then we will go into Tromsø for an inspection with divers in the first instance, says the shipping manager in Nergård
Sea fishing, Kenneth Holmøy, to Coast and Fjord.

The tugboat “Havila Venus” will try to pull the boat off the ground during the morning. The highest tide is at 10 o’clock.
– He is standing well, so we are excited about how it will be pulled off, says Holmøy, who states that “Senja” was traveling at 5.5 knots when it ran aground.
